Baron Wenckheim’s Homecoming

Baron Béla Wenckheim, a naive and eccentric Hungarian aristocrat of sixty-four, returns to his home town from exile in Buenos Aires, where he has run up large gambling debts. He hopes to be reunited with Marika, his childhood sweetheart. The townspeople, hearing of his arrival, convince themselves that he is immensely rich and will leave his fortune to the town.

A major subplot follows the Professor, a philosophically minded hermit who goes on the run after killing a member of a neo-Nazi biker gang. The novel is written in sentences that run for pages. The English translation is by Ottilie Mulzet.
