This memoir follows the artist Winfred Rembert’s experience of racism as a young African-American in the 1950s and 1960s. After imprisonment and an attempted lynching in the 1960s, he turned to painting and leather carving as a way to express himself. Rembert told his life story to Erin I.

Kelly, a philosophy professor, and the book reproduces his art. It was published after his death in March 2021.
