Night Watch

In 1874, in the aftermath of the American Civil War, twelve-year-old ConaLee and her mother, Eliza, who has not spoken for more than a year, are brought to the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum in West Virginia by a war veteran who has forced his way into their lives. ConaLee has been the adult in her family for as long as she can remember; her father left for the war and never came back. At the asylum she passes herself off as her mother’s maid while Eliza slowly begins to respond to treatment, and the two become part of the life of the place.
