The Friend

The unnamed narrator, a writer living in Manhattan, is mourning her best friend and mentor, who has recently taken his own life. Addressing him directly, she recalls his three troubled marriages, his career as a college professor and their disagreements. His third wife asks her to take in his elderly Great Dane, Apollo, who seems to be grieving too. The narrator reluctantly agrees, although dogs are not allowed in her building.
