Italy, 1986. Michelangelo Vitaliani, known as Mimo, is an old man dying in a monastery. A former sculptor, he is ’watching over her’: his last statue, which so disturbed those who saw it that it is now kept almost hidden.

He looks back and tells the story of his life. Born poor, fatherless and unusually small, he is sent in 1916 to Pietra d’Alba to be apprenticed to a tyrannical and talentless sculptor. There he meets Viola Orsini, the ambitious and free-spirited only daughter of the powerful Orsini family.
