We Do Not Part

Kyungha is a writer who lives alone, suffers from insomnia and is troubled by nightmares that began while she was writing a novel about a massacre of civilians. One day her old friend Inseon, who moved to Jeju Island to care for her mother and now works as a carpenter, sends a message from hospital after injuring her hand. She begs Kyungha to go to her house on Jeju and look after her pet bird before it dies.

Kyungha makes the journey through a blizzard, and the novel reflects on the legacy of the Jeju massacre. Han Kang regards the book as forming a pair with her earlier Human Acts.
