Piranesi takes the form of a journal written inside the House, a vast structure that appears to extend without limit. The setting supplies the novel’s central mystery: the reader encounters this world through the account of someone living within it. This is Susanna Clarke’s second novel, published sixteen years after Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.
It belongs to speculative fiction and won the 2021 Women’s Prize for Fiction. Its journal format offers a different starting point from the historical setting of Clarke’s debut.
