Aube is a young hairdresser and the only member of her family to survive Algeria’s ’black years’. She still bears the mark of them: a severe scar across her throat that has left her unable to speak. The novel deals with the Algerian civil war, a subject it remained illegal to publish on in Algeria, where the book was banned on its release.
