Running to almost 1,300 pages, La scuola cattolica mixes fiction, essay and memoir. The narrator tries to reconstruct his adolescence in the 1970s in a well-to-do district of Rome, centred on a Catholic boys’ school. The book deals with the Circeo massacre, a crime committed in 1975 by former pupils of the school, but its real subject is the world that produced them: comfortable families, an all-male education, neo-fascist ideology and the cult of violence that was widespread in those years.
