March: Book Three

March is an autobiographical graphic novel trilogy about the civil rights movement, told from the perspective of John Lewis, written by Lewis and Andrew Aydin and illustrated in black and white by Nate Powell. Book Three opens at the end of 1963, with the movement holding the country’s full attention and Lewis helping to guide it as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. As the threat of violence grows, the activists launch campaigns including the Freedom Ballot and the Mississippi Freedom Summer. The volume builds towards the campaign for voting rights and the confrontation in Selma, Alabama, known as Bloody Sunday.
