The Poet X

Xiomara Batista is a fifteen-year-old Dominican teenager in Harlem who loves writing poetry and longs to share it. Her religious mother cares only that she is confirmed, which has already been put off for three years, and Xiomara feels inferior to her much-praised brother, Xavier, known as Twin. During the school year she falls for her lab partner, Aman.

Writing becomes her way of working through the tension at home. The Poet X is a young adult novel in verse, and it addresses patriarchy, sexism and the objectification of young women.
