Omar El Akkad’s non-fiction book takes its title from the war in Gaza, but its criticism extends to Western imperialism and hypocrisy more broadly. El Akkad writes about the gap he sees between the West’s stated ideals and its conduct, and about his own disillusionment after believing in Western ideas of freedom. He argues that allies such as the United States and Israel are held to a different standard from their enemies.

He sets the situation of people in Gaza beside that of observers far from the war zone, including his own children. The book is addressed mainly to Western centrists and liberals who have not spoken out against the war.
