Shadow Country

Shadow Country is a semi-fictional account of the life of Edgar ‘Bloody’ Watson, a real Florida sugar-cane planter and alleged outlaw who was killed by a posse of his neighbours in the remote Ten Thousand Islands in 1910. Peter Matthiessen revised, condensed and combined his three earlier novels about Watson into this single volume, whose three sections correspond to the original books. The first pieces the story together from the first-person accounts of twelve characters, from Watson’s arrival in the early 1890s onwards.
