What is this book about?
The Mud of a Century is set in Chennai, India, in the days after a once-in-a-century flood. Its narrator is a Japanese woman working as a language instructor for an IT company, who finds herself drawn into flashbacks and memories, of words left unsaid, lives not lived and the consequences of her own karma. Written in a magic realist, stream-of-consciousness style with a wry humour, the novel moves between self and other, Japan and India, and past and present. The English translation is by Haydn Trowell.
