What is this book about?
Set in the Netherlands in 1961, The Safekeep centres on Isabel, a recluse who lives alone and tends the family home in Overijssel province with meticulous care. Her routine is broken when her brother Louis asks that his girlfriend, Eva, stay in the house for the summer. Isabel is at first repelled by her guest and feels that her personal space has been invaded.
As the two women spend more time together, an unlikely romance develops between them. It is Yael van der Wouden’s debut novel, published in 2024.
