The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida

Set in Sri Lanka in the 1980s and written in the second person, the novel follows Maali Almeida, a photographer who is already dead when the story begins. He is given one week, the seven moons of the title, in a limbo crowded with ghosts before he must either pass into ‘The Light’ or remain in the ‘In Between’. In that time he sets out to solve the mystery of his own death and to help his friends recover his photographs, which show government complicity in the brutality of the Sri Lankan Civil War. An earlier version of the novel appeared in the Indian subcontinent in 2020 as Chats with the Dead.
