What is this book about?

Prophet Song imagines Ireland moving towards authoritarian rule through the experience of one Dublin family. Eilish Stack, a scientist and mother of four, opens her door to officers from a newly established secret police force who want to question her husband. As public life becomes increasingly threatening and unpredictable, her effort to keep the family safe becomes the novel’s central concern.

Paul Lynch places domestic responsibilities beside the wider breakdown of political and social protections, asking how an ordinary person responds when familiar assumptions stop holding. This is a fictional dystopia rather than an account of an actual Irish government. Published in 2023, Lynch’s fifth novel won that year’s Booker Prize.
