What is this book about?

In Sakebi (Scream), Hikaru Hayano, left shattered by a figure known only as “Sensei”, begins studying bronze dōtaku bells and the history of the land. The area was once known for poppy cultivation and opium production, and among its past inhabitants was a young man who went to Manchuria and looked forward to the exposition planned for the empire’s 2,600th anniversary. As Hikaru’s research deepens, the Shōwa and Reiwa eras begin to connect and long-suppressed voices pour out. The publisher calls it a political love story moving between Osaka and the continent.
