Storia della mia gente sits between essay and novel, and is the author’s own story. Edoardo Nesi was heir to one of the leading textile mills in Prato, the Tuscan city famous for its cloth, a business founded by his grandfather. Faced with globalisation and what he sees as short-sighted industrial policy, he was forced to sell the family firm in 2004. He presents that defeat as a metaphor for the decline of Italian manufacturing, and describes a city in crisis, forgotten by the government and home to many Chinese immigrant workers.
