Summary
In a world plagued by catastrophic geological upheavals, society is divided into rigid castes. The story follows three women, each with the ability to control seismic activity, known as orogeny. Essun, a mother searching for her missing daughter, faces personal and societal challenges. Syenite, a young orogene, is forced into a breeding program to produce powerful offspring. Damaya, a child with orogenic abilities, is taken to a training facility to learn control. The narrative shifts between their perspectives, revealing their struggles and resilience. The oppressive societal structure marginalizes orogenes, who are feared and exploited. As the planet faces an impending apocalypse, the characters confront their roles within a broken system. Themes of oppression, survival, and identity are explored throughout the novel. The story weaves together personal and communal narratives in a richly developed world.
